Fun and Inconsistent

I am often reminded of how terrible I am of staying consistent on my website. It has been a constant struggle of setting aside time, remembering that this thing even exists, and keeping in mind the goals I eventually want to reach. This website is not a forever thing, it’s a means to an end; that end being that all of this art and these constantly swirling ideas all come to fruition to finally get me to where I can start my own business.

Motivation is such an up and down thing for me. I always have things sitting in the back of my mind, and it seems as I get older (having just turned 30) that they actually become clearer. But ideas aren’t actions! And that’s where I need to personally improve.

Having said that, here’s the latest piece I finished:

Kick Start My Heart

This piece had one soul purpose for me… to be fun! There are so many times where art seems to be at a struggle against itself and the artist has to choose between technique and meaningful content. By that I mean you have to choose between just doing something fun with absolutely no further meaning behind the image and display more of your skill/technique or you have to do something with this grand idea behind it that requires the viewer to question their beliefs, their political views, their whatever. You can still showcase technique in more meaningful pieces, but you often times still want the viewer to look beyond what is staring at them; to dig deeper, find something they can connect with on a more emotional level. To me, the best art is able to encompass technique, fun imagery, and thought provoking moments for the viewer.

This is not one of those pieces. This mofo is for straight up fun.

I wanted to do a series based on one of my most favorite things: coffee. So I broke it down. What emotions does coffee most provoke in me? Well the most abundant physical response that happens when I drink more than one cup is my heart starts to race. I LOVE that feeling. Before those jitters set in, I feel like I can lift the world onto my shoulders. It’s the perfect balance of ‘get it done’ and ‘I’m not sick yet!’. The first imagery that popped into my head based around these thoughts was coffee cup, anatomical heart, and jumper cables connecting the two. I trust that you readers can connect the dots from there. Furthermore, being the true 80’s born child that I am, I had to give a nod to one of the best rock songs of all time: Kickstart My Heart by Motley Crue.

For the most part, I want my art to have meaning. But I want to have fun and make the things I want to make. Sometimes you just have to let your hair down and remember that art has no rules, and that’s what I love most about it.

I plan to do more with this same concept of imagery around coffee, because fuck it, it’s what I love.

Portraits?

I finished this piece back in 2014. At the time, I was super stoked with it (to be honest, I still am), but it is amazing to see how my style progresses but also stays the same. I love the juxtapositions in things like this. On one hand you have the super simple skull looking away from the viewer. On the other hand you have the more detailed hand kind of coming out at the viewer.

I chose these two images in particular because I’ve always been really into art history, and historically, the face and the hands were shown in portraits to convey emotion, power, femininity, etc. I’m a huge fan of drawing hands for this reason. It’s a nod to the artists of old amongst other reasons I’ll probably discuss in future posts.

Portraits

Why the distortion? Hey, that’s my style. Why the placement? There might have been a reason at the time (I can get pretty cryptic behind my reasons for doing certain things in a piece), but I know for sure I wanted one element breaking the plane of the green background while the other stayed inside it. I know what it means to me, but I also like to let the viewer make up their own mind on the decisions I make and the meanings behind those decisions.

This is one of my favorite pieces I have done. It’s simple yet showcases some skill, it keeps with my love of saying “screw your normal sizing conventions”, and it makes use of some paper that probably would have otherwise been thrown away. Sometimes I hate naming pieces, so I just picked the element that conveyed the most basic meaning behind the images, “Portraits”.

*Fun fact about this piece, I used old credit card applications that I had gotten in the mail for the skull and hand bits of paper.

This piece is also for sale! If you’re interested in purchasing or would like to know more about dimensions and whatnot, hit me up in the “Contact” area at the top of the page.

The Seventh: Moral Blindspots; You Will Probably Be Offended

iTunes Icon 2

This podcast episode was interesting. We had a good friend of ours, Skyler, join us for this one. Whenever we have a guest join us for an episode, we let them choose whatever they want to talk about. Skyler chose moral blindspots/ ethical ambiguities.

I didn’t know much about this topic at first, but with a little research, I learned there are endless areas that almost everyone has to face these issues every day. Though all of us had somewhat differing opinions for this episode, it’s probably our most diverse and serious topic we’ve tackled thus far.

Side note; I love posting these older episodes and revisiting some of the things I’ve talked about with my friends. Like the title mentions, you will probably be offended by this episode. We didn’t hold back our opinions. But that’s the whole point! Right? Take a listen below:

The Eye

Icon for Website

This is one of my signature images, and it speaks a lot to my style. Lots of lines, kind of creepy, but also kindĀ of fun.

Why an eye? Because they’re cool! But eyes are something every artist tries to draw at some point, whether it be through sketches or professional pieces. They are also one of the hardest things to master.

However, it’s not my objective to master the perfect eye. Instead, I’d rather make them my own way. One of my mottos is to embrace the imperfections. If everything were perfect, the world would be a lot less interesting. So make things your own, and you might come up with something you truly love.

The Sixth: Upper Left Legends; Steps & Cemeteries & Octopi, Oh My!

iTunes Icon 2Our podcast is actually at 23 episodes as of this blog post. But I love posting the old episodes on here. The sixth episode we researched local legends, all about our area and Washington state. This is one of my favorite episodes. We had so much fun with it.

The episodes are rarely serious nor profound, but man are they fun. And I love the ladies I get to do this with.

Anyway, the link to the episode is below. Be sure to check out one of my favorites!

The Fourth: This One’s For You, Mom!

iTunes Icon 2For Mother’s Day, we did a very special episode. We love our mamas, and we wanted to tell some stories about them to share just how awesome they are.

I grew up with a single mom. Lord knows the hard times we had, but to me, she is my hero. I hope that your mom is equally as awesome and you show her some appreciation.

This is a show that I make along with 3 of my close friends. We talk about anything and everything and usually get extremely off topic, but hilarity still ensues. Keep in mind, when the episode was made we had a different name “How Did I Get Here.” We found another podcast with the same name and decided not to be jerks and came up with a different name instead, but otherwise this is us in the raw. Thanks so much for checking it out!
